Child Car Safety
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a child under age 13 is involved in a automobile crash every 34 seconds, and car crashes are a leading cause of death for children.
Michigan law requires all children from birth to age 8 be properly restrained in a child safety seat or booster seat until they are over 4'9" tall. Properly installed car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. Most parents are confident that they have installed their child's car seat correctly, but 2014 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data shows that 59 percent of seats are not installed properly. Parents, guardian, and caregivers can visit www.safercar.gov/parents to learn tips on car seat safety, sign up for car seat recall notifications, and find an inspection station in their area.
To help ensure your family's safety, the Shelby Township Police Department now has a certified child passenger safety technician on staff to answer questions and install or inspect car seats. Our technician is certified through the State of Michigan. Inspections/installations are offered, by appointment, throughout the year. The appointments take approximately 25 minutes and can be scheduled by contacting the officer. Be sure to have the car seat manual and vehicle manual with you.
