Part of the 42nd annual Shelby Township Art Fair, the 2025 Better Pie Baking Contest on Aug. 9 invites baking enthusiasts to showcase their skills. Judges will crown the "Better Pie" baker, with prizes awarded to the top three pies and a special package for the best junior baker under 13. Even if you're not competing, being a spectator promises a treat.
To participate, submit your pie in a disposable container for smooth judging. Pies are tasted in the order they’re received, so timely submissions are appreciated. Each pie must have a bottom crust, an optional top crust and a creative filling. While pre-made crusts are allowed, the filling must be your own creation. Given the outdoor setting in August, keep your pie cool and intact as refrigeration won’t be available. Submit your pie by 12:45 p.m. at the Better Pie Contest tent. Judging starts at 1 p.m. sharp, followed by the announcement of winners. Be present to claim your prize and share in the excitement.

A beloved local tradition is making a big move in 2025, and organizers promise this year’s Shelby Township Down Home Days Festival will be “better than ever” in its new home at the northwest corner of 23 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue.
Running May 23–26, the four-day celebration of community spirit and small-town fun features a packed schedule of live music, carnival rides, food vendors, and family-friendly entertainment.
“We enjoyed bringing Down Home Days back at Knights Pavilion Park, but moving the event back to the center of the township just feels right,” said Township Trustee Lisa Casali, who works with the Shelby Township Lions Club to organize the event.
“While we enjoyed the park setting off of 21 Mile Road, moving Down Home Days to 23 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue, in the parking lot of the old K-Mart building, brings the festival back to where it started.”
Festivalgoers can enjoy free live music all weekend long, starting Friday, May 23, with a performance from Bernadette Kathryn and the Lonely Days Band at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the music continues with Issac Harper at 1 p.m., Cooper Johnson at 3 p.m., and Planet of Fun Band at 7 p.m. Sunday’s schedule includes Set in Stone at 1 p.m. and Keegan Jacko at 7 p.m., while Monday will spotlight local musical acts still to be announced.
In addition to live entertainment, the festival’s signature carnival will be in full swing with hours from 4–11 p.m. on May 23, 12–11 p.m. on May 24 and 25, and 12–6 p.m. on Memorial Day, May 26. Wrist bands for carnival rides cost $32 on May 23, 24 and 25. The cost for a wrist band on Monday, May 26, is $27.
“For many years, Down Home Days was the headline event for summer in Shelby Township, and now that it’s back in the middle of everything, it’s going to be the best way for our community to get summer started all Memorial Day weekend,” said Joe Burke of the Shelby Township Lions Club.
“Whether it’s a family coming for the rides or music lovers enjoying the acts on stage, this year will be better than ever. We have something for all 80,000 Shelby Township residents.”
In addition to the carnival and live music, the Lions Club will be hosting the event’s beer tent, and concessions will be available throughout the carnival midway. No coolers or outside food and beverages will be allowed on the grounds. All activities will take place at 7601 23 Mile Road, with free on-site parking.
With a new location, more room to roam, and a full slate of entertainment, the 2025 Shelby Township Down Home Days Festival is set to deliver a memorable kickoff to summer.
