Among all the municipalities in Macomb County that provide full-service police and fire service to its residents, Shelby Township boasts the lowest tax rate with a local millage rate of 9.299. Of the township’s 9.2999 mils, 1 mil is dedicated to the general fund, 1 mil goes to the police and fire pension fund, 3.2575 mils are allotted for the fire operating fund and 4.0424 mils goes to the police operating fund.

Together, the Shelby Township Fire Department and the Shelby Township Police Department provide the best public safety service in Macomb County and the metro Detroit region at the best possible value.

The Shelby Township Fire Department proactively provides state-of-the-art, pace-setting, life and property preservation, and emergency services. The department is unhampered by tradition while recognizing and treating our people as our most valuable resource and the key to our success.

The Shelby Township Police Department utilizes the latest techniques in education, prevention, detection and enforcement. Its members undergo constant training to provide professional law enforcement services. Through a mutual effort with our citizens, businesses and community groups, Shelby’s Police Department keeps the township a place where people are secure in their homes, businesses and travels.

The working partnership between the township’s fire department, police department and our community has seen the township recognized as the safest community of its size in Macomb County in 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017, and one of the 50 safest cities in Michigan in 2017.
