Public Schools:

Shelby Township is part of the Utica Community Schools District (UCS), the second largest public school district in the State of Michigan. The district is well-known for its award-winning programs and high standardized test scores. The UCS Administrative Center is located at 11303 Greendale, Sterling Heights, MI 48312 and can be reached at 586-797-1000.

The Michigan Intermediate School District (MISD) services 21 local school districts throughout Macomb County. MISD provides support to these districts for special populations: children with special physical, mental, or emotional needs, exceptionally gifted children, and English language learners (ELL). You can discuss your child's options with school administration. Additionally, MISD provides parent resources available here, which may help you in assessing the needs of your child. Beyond MISD English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and tutoring for children, there are a number of community organizations who offer ESL classes in addition to a number of other services for non-English speakers and immigrants. Shelby Township Library:

The Shelby Township Library provides residents with a variety of print and digital materials including books, magazines, digital magazines, newspapers, audiobooks, downloadable ebooks and audiobooks, DVDs and Blu-rays, music CDS, and downloadable music. Also available are free Wifi, public computers with internet access, word processing, and online databases. Services include photocopying, printing, faxing, and scanning for a nominal fee.

The children's department provides a selection of materials for the education and entertainment of your children, and hosts a number of activities geared toward toddlers, young children, families, and teens.

For our senior citizens, those who are at least 50 years of age or are permanently disabled, we have a transportation system which travels to and from our Senior Center. The Shelby Township Senior Center offers activities and services for residents ages 55 and up.

Activities include classes such as crafts, computers, exercise, and woodcarving, weekly events such as bingo, choir, and cards, monthly events such as pinochle, euchre, dinner dances, and birthday parties, and special events such as ice cream socials, craft sales, Senior Olympics, a picnic, fishing derby, Christmas celebration, Senior Prom, Winter Carnival, and planned day or extended trips to places of interest.

Services include transportation (see above), tax preparation, "ask the lawyer", Medicare advocate services, information referrals to caregivers, chore services, and other senior services, health services such as blood pressure checks, cholesterol screening, flu shots, and hearing tests. Also offered are support groups such as the Alzheimer's Family Support Group and Deaf-Older Adult Services.

Lunch is available daily, Monday through Friday, at 11:30 a.m. for seniors ages 60 and up and is provided by the Macomb County Nutrition Program.

There are many local community organizations which assist new Americans in need of support, education, and employment. Many of these organizations are not exclusive to refugee assistance and provide services to all immigrants and other individuals in need. If you, a friend, family member, or neighbor are in need of assistance, please contact us, or any of these organizations, and someone will be more than happy to guide you.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS): Visit the MDHHS "Assistance Programs" page for guidance on a number of state programs which assist individuals with health services, education, employment, and more.

Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan provides translation services, counseling, cultural orientation, aid in the journey to US citizenship, and much more. A list of their services can be found here. The organization also provides services specific to the Hispanic community, for more information on these programs visit their Hispanic Outreach webpage. The Chaldean Community Foundation offers acculturation and training programs, behavioral health services, and other services relevant to the needs of new Americans. Translation Assistance Services:

The above organizations offer translation assistance for individuals, but for businesses or organizations in need of additional language resources, the State of Michigan provides a Translators Resource List which lists organizations and individuals who are able to translate documents.

An I Speak Card can be used to determine a person's language. The individual can select their language from the list, then the translation process can begin. Printing several copies of the card for your business or establishment is advisable.

Federal Equal Opportunity Housing Laws

The Charter Township of Shelby operates under federal and state Fair Housing laws. The Federal Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination based on national origin, religion, sex, familial status or disability.

State Equal Opportunity Housing Laws

The State of Michigan Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act provides additional protection against housing discrimination based on age and marital status. The State of Michigan Persons With Disabilities Civil Rights Act expands protections against housing discrimination for persons with disabilities.

Macomb County Animal Control provides licenses for all Shelby Township residents.

Macomb County Dog Licenses are required for dogs ages 4 months and older. All dogs are required by Michigan State Law to be licensed and vaccinated for rabies. Failure to maintain proper licensing may result in additional fines and fees.

You will need a copy of your dog's current rabies certificate (original or copy) and proof of spay/neuter (if not shown on the rabies certificate). Payment (see fee schedule) can be processed electronically with a debit or credit card. We will return all paperwork with your dog license by mail or email. Please note that license renewals done by mail will result in additional processing time up to 6-8 weeks. Late fees are assessed based on the postmark date.
