Shelby Township Library
In April of 1973, the library joined what is now the Suburban Library Cooperative, allowing it to receive and borrow materials from all other libraries in Macomb County. Today, the library consists of 12,500 square feet, 100,500 collections, 310 programs and 27 computers.
Topday patrons can access the library through the catalog, located on the library's website at www.shelbytwplib.org. The online catalog includes the holdings of the public libraries throughout Macomb County, Harper Woods and Troy Public Libraries. The Shelby Township Library's website also gives you access to audiobooks, ebooks, video and music.
Construction is moving along on the new 26,000-square-foot Shelby Township Library. Crews are at full capacity following delays from the COVID-19 shutdown. Crews installed the parking lot, and plans are in place for steel structures to go up after the installation of utility lines to provide power, fiber optic lines, cable and internet to the site.
The new library features increased space for children’s programming, a technology lab, a dedicated teen area, four meeting rooms and five study rooms among other added amenities that are absent for the current library at 51680 Van Dyke Ave.
“The process of planning the new Shelby Township Library has been joyful work,” Ester said. “We have an outstanding team of architects, engineers and designers that are working with us to plan a library that meets our needs and is a functional yet beautiful space. Obtaining site plan approval is an exciting step towards our groundbreaking day. Truthfully, every step that gets our Shelby Township residents closer to walking through the doors of their new library is a thrilling one.”
At it’s Nov. 20, 2018 meeting, the Board approved a preliminary budget of $11.2 million for the new library. The added facility will be paid for with budgeted, saved funds and require no tax increase, no debt, no bonding and no borrowing. Following the site plan approval by the Board of Trustees, the next step in the process will be for the township engineer to post a request for proposals for construction.
“Now that we know where the building will sit, and what it will look like, the only step left will be to build it,” Stathakis said. “That’s a significant step, but we are closer than ever to giving our township its first-ever standalone library.”
