Fold and place inside another paper grocery bag and accepted for curbside recycling.

The collection of large bulk waste, such as appliances, furniture, air conditioners, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, hot water heaters, carpets (cut and bound in 4’ lengths), storm doors and windows (provided all glass is either removed, broken and placed in a sealed container, or thoroughly taped), lawn furniture, and similar household rubbish in reasonable quantities, will continue to be part of your solid waste program. 

Please remove the doors and racks from refrigerators and freezers prior to setting them out for collection.  Waste hauler is responsible for the removal of Freon from items according to current environmental standards. 

You may set out large bulk items on your regular scheduled service day for collection by 7 a.m.  You may also call Priority Waste at 586-228-1200 for questions or with excessive quantities, to schedule a pickup.

DTE will also remove and recycle your refrigerator or freezer for free and give you a $50 gift card.

Should be flattened to 2' x 2' or smaller and put in the recycle cart. Extra boxes should be flattened, bound and placed next to the recycling cart. If the pile is placed by the trash container, it will be taken as trash. Large/oversized boxes should not be filled with other items and should still be broken down, cut up or flattened as best as possible. If they are not broken down, these boxes need to be placed by the trash container and will be taken with the trash.

Remove all food, packing material (cereal liners can be placed with plastics for recycling), or badly stained items. Flatten and stuff tightly into the biggest paperboard box or a brown paper bag and fasten securely with string.

Do Not Include: Milk cartons, drink boxes and orange juice cartons as they are wax coated and cannot be recycled.

If you are disposing of carpeting or padding, please cut it into 4' x 4' sections, roll and tie or tape the rolls. You may dispose of approximately 12 of these rolls at one time.

All Shelby Township residents can dispose of compact and tube fluorescent light bulbs throughout the year by making arrangements with the Macomb County Health Department. You can visit their website on Mercury-Containing Fluorescent Bulb Recycling for collection dates, times and locations.

You can also drop off compact fluorescent light bulbs at some local home improvement stores.

Not preferred for curbside recycling. Drop off at the annual Electronics Recycling Day event, typically held on Saturday October 11, 2025 at River Bends Park at 5700 22 Mile Road.

Visit the EPA’s site for details on how to recycle unwanted electronic items at any time. Some local electronics stores will accept certain electronic items.

When purchasing fire extinguishers, buy the best quality extinguisher you can find. Extinguishers with metal tops can be recharged, last forever & are cheaper in the long run than disposable, plastic varieties.

Fire extinguishers with metal tops can be recharged & should be tested every 5 or 6 years. Check the Yellow Pages under Fire Protection Equipment for service providers. Most service providers will accept old metal-topped extinguishers for recycling. Very old (glass) fire extinguishers must be disposed of as a hazardous waste. Do NOT throw in the trash or touch their contents.

Disposable, plastic fire extinguishers should be discharged into a trash can to depressurize & then disposed of with regular trash.

Empty gas cans can be discarded in the regular trash, just remove the lid. If they contain gasoline, they are accepted at the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. The Macomb County Health Department accepts gas cans from Macomb County residents through their Household Hazardous Waste collection. For collection dates, times and locations call 586-469-5236.

Don't just throw your important documents in the trash. Take them to be shredded and help prevent identity theft.

The Shelby Township Police Department has their annual Community Shred Day in October. You can contact the Police Department at 586-731-2121 or check out their website for more information.

Latex paint is now accepted at Household Hazardous Waste collection.

Other times of the year, latex paint may be disposed of in your regular trash once it is solidified. Use cat litter or other suitable absorbent material to dry out the paint. Once the paint is solidified, leave the lid off the can and set it out for collection with your regular curbside refuse next to your trash toter cart. Waste hauling companies cannot and will not accept liquid waste materials.

If you are unsure whether the paint is latex (water-based), refer to the clean-up instructions on the paint can. Clean-up for latex paint can be done using water. The Macomb County Habitat for Humanity ReStore does not accept paint.

Place in the recycle cart.

Before putting books and magazines in your recycle cart we suggest you contact the Shelby Township Library for details on which one(s) they may accept.

Mattresses and box springs must be securely wrapped in plastic before you place them curbside on your regular scheduled day (by 7am).

DO NOT FLUSH OR THROW IN TRASH. Dispose of unwanted medications at the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day held the last Saturday in April at River Bends Park at 5700 River Bends Drive.

A drug disposal station is located in the Shelby Township Police Department lobby located at 52530 Van Dyke Ave and is available 24 hours a day.

Accepted: Prescription Medications, Prescription Patches, Prescription Ointments, Over-the-counter medications, Vitamins, Samples, Medications for pets.

Not Accepted: Hydrogen Peroxide, Inhalers, Aerosol Cans, Ointments, Lotions or Liquids, Medication from businesses or clinics, Needles (Sharps), Thermometers.

For controlled (narcotics) medication disposal, you can contact the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office at 586-469-5151, or you can take them to the secure drop-off location in the main lobby of the Macomb County Jail, 43565 Elizabeth Street, Mount Clemens.

Not accepted for curbside recycling. Contact local shipping companies for disposal.
