The mission of the Shelby Township Fire Department is to reduce deaths, injuries, and property loss from fire, hazardous material incidents, emergency medical situations, and other disaster/emergency by being proactive in providing excellent, state of the art, pace setting, life and property preservation and emergency services in a professional and cost-effective manner, unhampered by tradition while recognizing and treating our people as our most valuable resource and the key to our success.

The Shelby Township Fire Department also offers outreach programs like station tours, public education courses such as CPR training and provides fire reports and other information to the community through its offices located at Fire Station No. 1.

Community Connect

The Shelby Township Fire Department uses a platform to help residents and businesses prepare for emergencies and keep the community safe.

“The Shelby Township Fire Department is always looking for ways to improve our service to the community,” Fire Chief Joush Fouchia said. “We have been working closely with technology partner First Due to release Community Connect, an application focused on protecting residents and their property in the most effective way possible during an incident or major disaster.”

Community Connect is a secure, easy-to-use platform that lets residents share critical household information to help first responders respond more efficiently and effectively, resulting in better incident outcomes.

Besides the residential portal, Community Connect helps business owners and managers keep people safe by giving First Responders access to critical documents like evacuation procedures, occupant rosters, hazardous material lists, and more.

Designated contacts at properties in the program receive immediate text alerts when First Responders are dispatched to the building.

“Community Connect is completely voluntary, and residents are individually able to decide which information they are comfortable sharing,” Assistant Chief Craig Chynoweth explained. “Residents simply create a profile and enter critical property and occupant information, which is then made available to the Fire Dept at the time of dispatch. Data provided by residents within Community Connect is 100% secure and is used only for better serving the resident during emergencies.”

Open House

Each year the Shelby Township Fire Department hosts an open house in observation of the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Prevention Week. The open house is a family-friendly event that provides an opportunity to tour the fire station, meet firefighters and participate in many fun, educational activities.

The annual Shelby Township Fire Department Open House will run 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, at Fire Station No. 1 at 6345 23 Mile Road. Come and join the Shelby Township Fire Department in celebrating National Fire Prevention Week.

The Shelby Township Fire Department uses a third party biller for all EMS billings. Please contact EMSMC at 888-330-5405 for any questions about your bill.

Does the fire department accept sharps/needles?
No, we do not. We suggest you visit safeneedledisposal.org for local disposal options.

I need help installing my child’s car seat. Who should I call?
STFD has one member who is a certified child passenger safety seat technician. He is available, by appointment, to inspect your seat for expiration and recalls, help with installation, educate you on proper seating positions, and answer any questions you may have. Please send an email to mleroy@shelbytwp.org or call 586-731-3476 ext. 3 to set up an appointment.

How do I schedule a fire-related educational program or engine visit?
Please contact Lt. Inspector Rob Muylaert at 586-731-3476 ext. 2710 or rmuylaert@shelbytwp.org. Your request should include the event, date, time, location, and point of contact including a contact number for the event.

What should I do with an expired fire extinguisher?
We suggest you take the extinguisher outdoors and empty it into a large garbage bag to depressurize it. You can then throw the empty canister in the bag and put it out with your regular trash.

Does the fire department service fire extinguishers?
No, however you can find local fire extinguisher businesses in the yellow pages or online to service them.
