Notice: Early Absentee Ballot Processing
The Shelby Township Clerk's Office will be conducting early processing of absentee ballots from Monday, July 27 through Friday, July 31.

A team of 14 election inspectors will be present to process absentee ballots during these scheduled hours.
Please note that this is ballot processing only. No election results will be released until after the polls close on Election Day, as required by law.

How do I register to vote?
Voter registration is now automatic during driver’s license or state ID transactions at Michigan Secretary of State branch offices. You may also register to vote by mail or in person at the local Clerk's Office, the County Clerk’s Office, military recruitment offices or specified agencies for clients receiving services. It is important to note that the address on your voter registration must match the address on your MI driver’s license or state ID; a change in one will be automatically reflected on the other. Military and Overseas Voters
If you are in the Military or an American Overseas, please visit FVAP.gov for further information and to request an absentee ballot via the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA).
You have the option to receive your ballot by email. Scan or take a picture of your completed FPCA and email to Elections@shelbytwp.org or mail to the Township Clerk’s office.
Where do I vote on Election Day?
There are 20 precincts in Shelby Township, each with an assigned polling location. Newly registered voters and voters who move into the township are sent a voter ID card with polling location and district information. This information is also available on the Michigan Voter Information Center website at the link above.
You are not required to show your voter ID card to vote, just present photo ID. Acceptable forms of ID include:
- a driver’s license
- state ID
- school ID
- tribal ID
Voters who are not in possession of their ID while in the polls may sign an affidavit.
You must have lived at your registered address for the 30 days preceding an election in order to vote. If you move during the 30 days preceding an election you may be eligible to vote one last time in your prior polling location. We can help determine where you should vote.
The polls are open on Election Day from 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
All polling locations are handicap accessible and equipped with voter assist terminals. These terminals are available to any person and provide voters with ballot language using audio output, large print or high contrast readouts. Selections can be made via touch screen, key pad, or sip-puff technology. Ballots indicating the voter’s selections are printed by the terminal to be inserted into the precinct tabulator by the voter.

Absent Voter Information
In 2018 Michigan voters approved Proposal 3, making some changes to election law. One of those changes is that voters can now request an absentee ballot without stating a reason.
Requests must be made in writing. Use the generic application below for an absentee ballot or contact the Clerk's Office for a voter-specific application
The Clerk’s Office maintains a list of voters who would like to be mailed an application each time they are eligible to vote. Let us know if you would like to be added to our mailing list.
Michigan law requires voters to sign an application each time they wish to be issued a ballot. Being on our mailing list means we will automatically send a convenient application for you to sign and return if you wish to be issued an absentee ballot.
Ballots are mailed promptly to your registered address in response to a completed application. If you are temporarily away, you may request that your ballot be mailed to an address outside our jurisdiction. Voters in medical or long-term care facilities in or out of our jurisdiction may have election mail sent to them there. Election mail is not forwarded.
The last day the Clerk's Office is permitted to mail an absentee ballot for ANY election is 5 p.m. the Friday prior to Election Day. Following that deadline, voters must request their own ballots only, in person at the Clerk’s Office. The office is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. the Saturday before Election Day. You may also request your ballot in person on the Monday prior to Election Day until 4 p.m. Ballots issued on Monday before Election Day must be voted in the office and returned that day.
Active members of the armed services, their spouses and dependents, citizens residing outside the United States and voters affected by emergencies that occur after the absentee voter deadline should contact the Clerk’s Office for assistance.

Election Worker Information
Those interested in being involved in the electoral process can serve as an election worker. Candidates must be U.S. citizen and registered to vote. Senior citizens and high school or college students are encouraged to apply. Election workers will be compensated for their time working on Election Day.
