MISSION STATEMENT

The purpose of the Shelby Gardeners Club shall be:

  • To promote interest and knowledge for our members and the community in gardening, flower arrangement and ecology.
  • To aid in the protection of native plants, trees, and wildlife.
  • To encourage civic planting, beautification and friendship as a means of setting a positive example in our community.
  • We shall support recycling projects and give recognition to businesses and local residents who also share these goals.

GARDENERS CLUB MEETINGS are on the 2nd Thursday of the month (Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center (4101 River Bends Drive, off Ryan Road, south of 22 Mile Road).  A general business meeting begins at 10:00 am, and usually we are joined by a guest speaker at 1:00 pm to address the group on a variety of topics.  This part of the program is open to the public and anyone interested in the speaker is encouraged to join us.  The program for the month is typically listed in the local newspaper and on the website.  You may also phone the President for this information.

PROJECTS

gard club member in Heritage GardenThe Garden Club’s most important ongoing project is Heritage Gardens which is located on the Municipal Grounds, east of the Municipal Building.  The Garden Club purchases the plants, and tends to and weeds the gardens throughout the summer.  The Club is also involved in community projects such as making corsages for the Senior Center Birthday Party Luncheon, gifts for residents of the Regency Park Nursing Home, and assistance with the Annual Shelby Township Clean-up Day.  We are also pleased to present speakers on many different topics for public enlightenment.

The SGC is currently led by Karen McCuen, President; Susie Souva, 1st Vice President; Linda Wojtowicz, 2nd Vice President; Linda Latsko, Secretary; and Chris Jump, Treasurer. Jan Kennedy heads up the Membership Committee, and welcomes all garden lovers. The public is invited to attend the monthly meetings, held on the 2nd Thursday of every month at the Shadbush Nature Center. For further information, please contact Ivy, Publicity, at 586.781.6742

Displays and Community Service Projects

The SGC, active throughout the year, is responsible for the seasonal displays at Heritage Gardens. The Gardens were graced by a beautiful array of perennials and annuals this past summer; whimsical, humorous scarecrows entertained visitors this past fall; winter brought festive evergreen displays in overhead baskets and outdoor pots lining the entrance to the Gardens.

 Janet Costello and Lois Hayward

Community service projects include the crafting of corsages for the Township’s Daddy-Daughter Dance, and hand-made projects throughout the year for Regency Manor, an area assisted living facility. The Club also makes corsages for monthly birthdays at the Shelby Senior Center, participates in the annual township cleanup, and contributes monetarily to area non-profit groups.
