MEDICATIONS
Historically, unwanted medications were either flushed down the toilet or thrown out in the garbage. Both of these options pose a risk: Children or pets can accidentally ingest medications discarded in the garbage; Medications flushed down the toilet may not be completely removed by the sewage treatment process and end up in ground or surface waters.

The Macomb County Health Department accepts unwanted and outdated NON-CONTROLLED medications from Macomb County residents through their Household Hazardous Waste collection for proper disposal. Before bringing in your unwanted medication please follow these procedures: Remove pills from bottles and blister packs and combine together in an unmarked/unlabeled container such as a zip lock bag; Please do not bring pill bottles to either collection site.

For collection dates, times and locations click here or call (586) 466-7923. Alternatively medications can be brought in to the Mount Clemens Health Center anytime during normal business hours.

For CONTROLLED (narcotics) medication disposal you can contact the Macomb County Sheriff's Office at (586) 469-5151 or you can take them to the secure drop-off location in the main lobby of the Macomb County Jail, 43565 Elizabeth Street, Mount Clemens, (586) 469-5151 (drop-off hours are scheduled to be daily, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. -- read the media release for more details).

For more information regarding safe disposal of medications, including pharmacies that accept them, you can visit the DisposeMyMeds.org website.

LATEX PAINT
Latex paint is not accepted at Household Hazardous Waste collection. Latex paint may be disposed of in your regular trash once it is solidified. Use cat litter or other suitable absorbent material to dry out the paint. Once the paint is solidified, leave the lid off the can and set it out for collection with your regular curbside refuse next to your trash toter cart. Waste hauling companies cannot and will not accept liquid waste materials. If you are unsure whether the paint is latex (water-based), refer to the clean-up instructions on the paint can. Clean-up for latex paint can be done using water.

The Macomb County Habitat for Humanity ReStore accepts paint along with many other building materials.
