HOLIDAY COLLECTION

If your trash pick up falls on or after a holiday, your pick up will be delayed one day later that week only for the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

SENIOR DISCOUNT

TRASH TIPS

Please be sure to put all trash, recycling and yard waste at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your regular trash day.

Occasionally, debris put loosely into the trash toter cart will be caught by the wind and will blow out of the trash truck. If you are experiencing this problem, please contain your household trash in plastic trash bags before putting it into the toter cart. This will also alleviate sticky trash being left in the cart.

Please leave enough room (at least one foot) between the trash tote and yard waste so the trucks pick up arm can get between them.

CARPET

If you are disposing of carpeting or padding, please cut it into 4' x 4' sections, roll and tie or tape the rolls. You may dispose of approximately 12 of these rolls at one time.

WHITE GOODS

Stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, hot water heaters, etc. will be picked up on your regularly scheduled trash collection day if you call Republic Services/Allied Waste at (800) 959-9067, 24 hours in advance.

YARD WASTE

Yard waste materials are collected from April through November each year.

Please follow these guidelines to insure that your yard waste is picked up. Twigs, brush and branches should not exceed 1-inch in diameter and should be tied in bundles of not more than 4-feet in length and 18-inches in diameter. Please do not dispose of the following items in your yard waste: sod, stones, dirt, plastic containers, landscape timbers, brick, landscape fabric and plastic weed barriers, straw, hay, apples, logs, tree stumps and plastic bags. [Yard Waste Collection flyer]

PLEASE LIMIT THE WEIGHT OF YOUR YARD WASTE CONTAINER TO APPROXIMATELY 75 POUNDS. A CONTAINER FULL OF GRASS CAN EXCEED 200 POUNDS.

Disposing of Additional Items

20 LB. PROPANE CYLINDERS

20 lb. propane cylinders are not accepted by Republic Services/Allied Waste, nor are they included in Household Hazardous Waste collection.

The following companies accept these cylinders for disposal:

Amerigas, 6654 Cotter, Sterling Heights, (800) 627-0019 -- $7.50/cylinder

MEDICATIONS

Historically, unwanted medications were either flushed down the toilet or thrown out in the garbage. Both of these options pose a risk: Children or pets can accidentally ingest medications discarded in the garbage; Medications flushed down the toilet may not be completely removed by the sewage treatment process and end up in ground or surface waters.

The Macomb County Health Department accepts unwanted and outdated NON-CONTROLLED medications from Macomb County residents through their Household Hazardous Waste collection for proper disposal. Before bringing in your unwanted medication please follow these procedures: Remove pills from bottles and blister packs and combine together in an unmarked/unlabeled container such as a zip lock bag; Please do not bring pill bottles to either collection site.

For collection dates, times and locations click here or call (586) 466-7923. Alternatively medications can be brought in to the Mount Clemens Health Center anytime during normal business hours.

For CONTROLLED (narcotics) medication disposal you can contact the Macomb County Sheriff's Office at (586) 469-5151 or you can take them to the secure drop-off location in the main lobby of the Macomb County Jail, 43565 Elizabeth Street, Mount Clemens, (586) 469-5151 (drop-off hours are scheduled to be daily, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. -- read the media release for more details).

For more information regarding safe disposal of medications, including pharmacies that accept them, you can visit the DisposeMyMeds.org website.

MEDICATION INJECTION NEEDLES/SHARPS

Collect your needles/sharps in a secure container and then take them to your medical provider for proper disposal.

DO NOT DISPOSE OF NEEDLES/SHARPS IN YOUR TRASH!

There is a drop-off location for needles and sharps in secure containers--they are accepted anytime, at no charge, at the Emergency Room of St. John North Shores Hospital, 26755 Ballard St (west off Jefferson between Shook & Crocker), Harrison Twp, (586) 466-5259.

LATEX PAINT

Latex paint is not accepted at Household Hazardous Waste collection. Latex paint may be disposed of in your regular trash once it is solidified. Use cat litter or other suitable absorbent material to dry out the paint. Once the paint is solidified, leave the lid off the can and set it out for collection with your regular curbside refuse next to your trash toter cart. Waste hauling companies cannot and will not accept liquid waste materials. If you are unsure whether the paint is latex (water-based), refer to the clean-up instructions on the paint can. Clean-up for latex paint can be done using water.

The Macomb County Habitat for Humanity ReStore accepts paint along with many other building materials.
