Heritage Gardens

 
Shelby Township’s beautiful Heritage Gardens are located behind the Municipal 
Offices at 52700 Van Dyke Ave.adjacent to a 2.5-acre, spring-fed lake. This facility was completed in the fall of 1975 as part of a Shelby Township Bicentennial Committee project, and is available to you for wedding ceremonies and photos. 


Amenities available to you

  • 10-foot gazebo situated in a gated, formal garden area adjacent to the lake (has one two-outlet outdoor electrical box)
  • Up to 10 white chairs are available to rent for $5 each at the time the Gardens are reserved
  • Brick walkway leading to gazebo from the Shelby Township Municipal Building
  • Restrooms are located on the lower level of the Municipal Building
  • Please note that plantings are seasonal and the fountain may not be operational from October through April


Hourly fees 

  • $35 per hour for residents of Shelby Township and the City of Utica. Proof of residence is required 

  • $110 per hour for non-residents

  • Payment by cash, check, Visa, or MasterCard is accepted

  • Non-refundable fee collected at time of reservation

Hope Chapel

The Historic Hope Chapel was built in the 1890s as Hope United Methodist Church and its original home was on the west side of Van Dyke Ave., just north of 24 Mile Road. In 2001, it was moved from that site and placed on the Shelby Township Municipal Grounds at 52700 Van Dyke Ave. next to the Historic Andrews School House Museum. Thanks to several generous donations of funding and labor, the Chapel has been renovated, and is available for wedding ceremonies year around except for on major Holidays and during special events. 


Amenities available to you

  • 11’ 6” x 11’ 6” Wedding Party Preparation Room
  • 2 Restrooms
  • Podium for Speaker/Clergy (secured to floor)
  • Sound system with a single CD and MP3 player, iPod dock, cordless microphone and remote inside podium
  • Small table for your Unity Candle or Sand Ceremony
  • Seating for 80 people (15 pews) - NO EXTRA CHAIRS ALLOWED due to fire safety regulations
  • Fully accessible to handicapped visitors (enter on side of the porch)
  • Our Chapel Attendant will open and close the Chapel for your rehearsal and on your wedding day

Hourly fees
  • $335 per hour for residents of Shelby Township and the City of Utica. Proof of residence is required
  • $435 per hour for non-residents
  • Includes 2 ½ hours for ceremony and 1 hour rehearsal on the Thursday prior to the wedding. 
  • Payment by cash, check, Visa, or MasterCard is accepted

Nature Center and Baseball Fields

 

Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center

You can hold a special birthday party at Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center for your child. The party can include a chance to touch, hold, and be photographed with some live animals.  It also includes our popular nature walk (weather permitting).  Your reservation will include the use of our multi-use room for 4 hours. This rooms holds about 24 total adults and children. You bring decorations, food, table covers, cake, and party favors. Parties are available select days, (typically Saturday or Sunday afternoons), when other Nature center events don't conflict. The fee is $120 for Shelby Township or Utica residents or $145 non-residents. The reservation is confirmed when payment is made. You can register in person at the center with cash or check.  Call the nature center at 586-323-2478 for more details.

Ford Field CP   Baseball Fields
Shelby Township has many baseball and softball fields available for rental once Little League is completed for the season. For $40, you will be given a two-hour time block and the field will be dragged and chalked. For more information, call the Parks, Recreation & Maintenance department at 586-731-0300. 

 


Pavilions

At township parks throughout the community, Shelby Township Parks, Recreation and Maintenance maintains facilities for residents to enjoy functions and gather together under its many pavilions. Pavilion reservations can be made for up to one year in advance (by the month) and are accepted in person or by phone. River Bends Park

River Bends Park, located on the south side of 22 Mile Road between Shelby and Ryan roads, has 3 pavilions that can accommodate up to 180 persons each, and you can reserve one for your special occasion. Shelters are equipped with nine picnic tables, electrical outlets, single barbeque grills, access to water, restrooms, a playground area, sand volleyball courts (net is up, but you provide ball), and horseshoe pits (you provide horseshoes). There is no vehicle fee to enter this park, but a fee is charged to reserve a pavilion. Mapleview Shelter rents for $110, and Bittersweet and Hickory Grove Shelters rent for $170 for the day to Shelby Township and Utica residents. Non-residents add $30 to their rental fee. A smaller shelter located in Woodall Neighborhood Park is also available for rent. This shelter accommodates up to 60 people and rents for $100 for residents and $130 for nonresidents. Amenities include 6 picnic tables, a single barbeque grill, water in restrooms only, and electricity. Woodall Park is located on River Bends Drive, east of Ryan Road between Auburn and 22 Mile Roads


Mae Stecker Park

The shelter at Mae Stecker Park can accommodate 25-30 and has limited availability for rental. There is a playscape, ball diamonds, and volleyball courts nearby. Basketball and tennis courts are located at the other end of the park. Mae Stecker Park is located on the south side of 24 Mile Road, east of Van Dyke and the shelter rents for $50 for residents and $80 for non-residents.

Chief Gene Shepherd Park

Shelby Township’s newest park, Chief Gene Shepherd Park is located on 23 Mile Road, east of Dequindre. The 2,400-square-foot shelter has a 180-person capacity with 10 picnic tables and electricity. Visitors have access to a playground area, indoor restrooms, access to water, sand volleyball (net is up, but you provide ball), horseshoe pits (you provide horseshoes), and bocce ball. The fee to rent this shelter is $170 for residents and $200 for nonresidents.

Need a room for a meeting? Planning a birthday party or shower and need a space larger than your home can provide? We can provide rooms, complete with tables and chairs for up to 100 people at the Shelby Township Community Center on limited dates Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and limited times on Saturday and Sunday. Please note that the senior center kitchen is not available and no alcohol is permitted on the premises. Call Parks and Recreation at 586-731-0300 for more information.
